Cuz we're the Young Ones

Anyone remember this show?

Jonathon and I used to watch it a lot. I believe one of my Christmas presents to Jonathon was a set of videos of the tv show.

I don't know what made me think about it. But it was funny.

Good story.

What made it good & funny?

First of all, the hodgepodge of characters--particularly Vyv and Rik--lead to ridiculous situations in the worst public school poverty imaginable. Dirty hippie, dirty absurdist punk, dirty pseudo-literate, plus clean father figure (and occasional one-liner Russian) can only cause crazy havoc.

Second, the show had awesome transitions (most recently seen in Mr. Show) that usually involved archetypical British milieux and puppets.

Third, there was a lot of good-natured destruction. Remember when they blew up the whole house?

Four, musical interludes (including Madness, The Damned, Amazulu, & Dexy's Midnight Runners) unrelated to plot or theme.

Five, more Cliff Richard references than you care to count.

Great show. But like most creative things, not for everyone.

I didn't actually ask what made it good and funny, but thanks for your answer! You should bring the tapes home this weekend...
